ILLINOIS — A bill, signed into law Friday, goes into effect immediately to bestow veteran status on members of the Illinois National Guard.

State Senator Scott Bennett (D) drafted the initiative after complaints members of the National Guard were not classified as veterans since they had not been called to active duty.

Senator Bennett said, “This is one simple step we can take to work toward giving veterans benefits they deserve. … It’s our duty to honor the sacrifices made by our veterans regardless of their rank or what branch of military they are in.”
